Further to a revision of the genus Coelichneumon by Riedel on 2012, the species imperiosus becomes a Thyrateles because its Hypopygium is long (and not short).

Townes published the generic keys of Ichneumonidae of World except (due to the lack of sponsors) those of Ichneumoninae.
The current general keys of Ichneumoninae follow (to my knowledge ...) those of Schmiedeknecht, it is the case for Constantineanu & Valemberg, but not for Berthoumieu.
The key, which I present you here, are the fruit of the translation of those of Constantineanu because this author describes rather completely the Insects, I completed with Schmiedeknecht.
Taxapad and Faunaitalia allowed me to find the other species absent otherwise, on this subject there are some differences between these 2 sites as for the presence of the species in Italy and their generic classification.

Is not either included in the key :
- Diphyus sexzonatus Rudow 1888 (Known only in Sicily), because the description of author don't allow me to integrate the species.
- Diphyus efferus Wesmael 1854, because I did not find the description of ♀ (Who is maybe unknown ?).
- Diphyus macilentus Berthoumieu 1898, because I did not find the description of ♀ (Who is maybe unknown ?).

Identification of Ichneumonidae.

* The 1st difficulty is the distinction between ♂ & ♀, it is needed to have one very good binocular for examine the ventral apex of the insect (even some specialists have difficulty).
* The 2nd difficulty is the lack of stability of colors :
- - Of Abdomen, for example on the Dipyus palliatorius typus (black and orange/red) the black is going to disappear by the maximal extension of the orange / red, and he will involve with the ssp. rufescens. See photos joined.
In case of doubt it will be necessary thus maybe envisage the 2 cases to take into account this possible disappearance of a color, by remembering that generally the black color of the Tergites 1 and following does not disappear completely on Amblyteles s.l.
- Of Legs, their colors are clearly more stable, their extension can obviously vary but generally not until disappear, however we can find cases extremes.
- See photos of 2 ♂ of Stenichneumon culpator, on the form (extreme here) of the ssp. adsentator the red totally disappeared, besides the red color of the Abdomen very diffuse (even invisible), in such cases the key will be insufficient and will be needed several captures of the same species in same place to find a typical species, or otherwise use criteria more subtle (which are absent in my key ... regrettably).
- Of Scutellum, Clypeus, Pterostigma , their colors are rarely absolute criteria.
The classification of Probolus varies according to the authors, in reason the definition of the PLATYURI, in case of doubt it will be necessary to consult the keys of this SubTribu and that of the AMBLYPYGI (for example the one that I have already given).

How to read the scientific names present in the keys that you will find in the "aggiunfi files" ?
- In the 2nd column, between hooks, in blue characters and italics, the name which we find usually in the former Authors.
- In the last column :
- The current names (according to Taxapad) of genera & species, and possibly the name of the creator of the species (to avoid the confusions between the species of the same name).
The name of genera in bold type and blue, concerns species which are not AMBLYPYGI (by noting the maybe uncertain classification of Probolus culpatorius).
The finale of the names of the species has to follow the Latin rules, knowing very little the in Latin, you will rectify the finales "us" by "a" if need be...
