Hello everyone I imagine that this is Pycnogaster sanchezgomezi Bolívar, 1897, which I found at Cabo de Gata on 16 April 2010. However, on the attached map from Pfau, H. K. (1988) Untersuchungen zur Stridulation und Phylogenie der Gattung Pycnogaster Graells, 1851 (Orthoptera, Tettigoniidae, Pycnogastrinae). Mitt. Schweiz. Entomol. Ges. 61: 167-183 there are no Pycnogaster species shown for the Cabo de Gata area (marked in purple)... Any ideas anyone? Ciao Teresa |

Ciao Teresa  Non sono uno specialista di ortotteri, ma un curioso...per natura  Non posso perciò confermare o meno la tua determinazione a livello specifico. Ho consultato però il sito "Orthoptera Species File Online" (per me uno dei migliori siti entomologici presenti sul web per precisione e ricchezza delle informazioni contenute) e, in particolare, la pagina dedicata al genere Pycnogaster, dove sono presenti tutte le specie note e ad ognuna è dedicata una scheda con bibliografia e immagini. Se apri la scheda di Pycnogaster (Bradygaster) sanchezgomezi sanchezgomezi Bolívar, 1897 e, in particolare, la "Specimen list", vedrai tu stessa che il lectotipo di questa sottospecie, (designato da Pinedo. 1987[1986]. Eos 62:233) ampiamente raffigurato, proviene proprio da Almeria  P.S. - Scusa se ti rispondo in italiano  P.P.S. - Nella collezione del "Zoologisches Forschungsinstitut und Museum Alexander Koenig, Bonn" è presente un secondo esemplare, raccolto ad Almeria, che porta i seguenti dati: Pycnogaster sanchezgomezi sanchezgomezi, det. K.-G. Heller individuals: male collector: Heller; 01.08.1984 locality: Spain, Almeria, Velez Blanco, 37° 41' N, 2° 5' W vedi qui |

Hi Marcello Thanks for your detailed reponse. I have already been in touch with Klaus-Gerard Heller about this specimen, and he said: "Unfortunately it seems not to be possible to identify the species from pictures. For me sanchezgomezi is more likely - large range and certainly not confined to high altitudes as possibly inermis. Song records would be interesting and helpful at least a little. But perhaps it is something distinct..." So, next time I go to Almería I must try to get a recording of the male singing!! Ciao Teresa |
