It was the biggest Wasp I've ever seen. Its length is around 45-50mm. Bumblebee, scale can be taken. Plant: Onopordum sp. |

Megascolia (Regiscolia) maculata subsp. maculata (Drury, 1773) accompained probably by Bombus (Megabombus) ruderatus (Fabricius, 1775).

I wasn't expecting the type description of Bombus, that extra info was good   Thanks a lot Giorgio.  There is something I don't understand. Most M. maculata females have a yellow head (Male black). Why is this orange? Is it related to subspecies?

Also in Italy females of M. m. flavifrons have head yellow to orange color; actually this variability must be specific of single specimen.
