….queste sono due delle Formiche che ospitavano questi: viewtopic.php?f=416&t=98182&hilit=grandicollis ...volevo fotografarle vive tenendole in un barattolino , ma solo oggi ho avuto tempo di farlo trovandole ormai morte. Misurano 6 mm., si riesce a capire a che specie appartengono ? |

...sembrano le solite Messor wasmanni…..anche se queste erano di medie dimensioni e non grandi come le trovo di solito.

I think this is rather Messor minor than M. wasmanni. |

Concordo anche io sulla identificazione di Lech Borowiec. Per me è Messor minor per via della rugosità presente nel capo, che in M. wasmanni solitamente è molto meno pronunciata... C'è tuttavia da dire che le due specie possono pure ibridarsi. Personalmente sono poco aggiornato e anche i lavori che parlano dell'ibridazione sono relativamente vaghi. |

….grazie a entrambi, ho notato in questo post di Michele Butta (esemplari pugliesi) viewtopic.php?f=137&t=60412&hilit=messor+minor ...che sono praticamente identici ai miei, cioe' da lontano sembrano completamente neri (e non dalla testa rossa come in altri post)...ma quando ti avvicini si nota piu' il rossastro. In effetti in zona, ma in un altro praticello, e' presente anche la wasmanni… viewtopic.php?f=137&t=38122&hilit=wasmanni |

Several species of Messor can hybridize, see link to the paper: https://www.researchgate.net/publicatio ... Formicidae In Greece and Bulgaria probably M. hellenius and M. mcarthuri regularly hybridize, but effect of such hybridization is often untypical and does not produce intermediate hybrids as in a typical genetic hybridization, because ants also have a mechanism of hybridogenesis, where hybrids can retain the phenotype of only one of the parent species. |

...thanks Lech for explanation, if in Bulgaria and Greece is normal ... it is probable that mine is also a hybrid. Therefore I believe that Messor minor will remain with cf.
