Hi,

Is this indeed Percus cylindricus Chaudoir, 1868 ?

Thank you!

No, in my modest opinion this is P. strictus ellipticus Porta. In the detail picture of the head you can observe several vertical corrugations behind the eye. This area is smooth in the P. cylindricus that normally has also almost no striations on the elitrae. You should observe the area behind the eye in each individual, in order to be sure for all samples.

Grazie Augusto!

But, are they not too small for P. Strictus? I've tried to photograph the area bahind the eye a bit better, all three specimen:

If I succeed in obtaining a good picture I will send it this evening. To me, all three of your samples appear to be P. strictus, but let's compare the images. Size doesn't matter very much: the P. strictus populations of the mountains are normally rather small, but P. cylindricus is even smaller, shiny, smooth and the body is depressed.

Now, here are a few pictures of a "topotypical" Percus cylindricus from Monte Tonneri (1100 m.a. s.l. elevation, South-East Sardinia).
Here is a top view of the forward portion. You can distinctly observe the shape (smooth) behind the eyes
P. cyl-1.jpg

and the deplaned base of the pronotum.
In the following pic. a side view of the head
P. cyl-3.jpg

and, eventually, an important character i.e. the deplaned elitrae outer edge:
P. cyl-4.jpg

from the shoulder up to the apex.
I hope these pictures will help in clarify your determination.

Hello Augusto,

I'm still not fully convinced! ;)

Mine show a deplaned pronotum base and a deplaned outer edge (but not completely till the apex)..
Do you have a picture of genitalia? Could it be different species on one spot?

Kind regards and thank yu very much!
