L'ho sempre ritenuto un arcadicus, ma visto che di carabi non italiani non ci capisco niente e non ho testi per l'identificazione, forse è meglio se chiedo conferma.

well it's indeed Carabus (Chaetocarabus) arcadicus arcadicus Gistel, 1850 (not "Gistl", according to fauna eur), if we consider merlini as subspecies of arcadicus should conversely merlini be treated as a separate species, the former would become simply Carabus (Chaetocarabus) arcadicus Gistel, 1850, being in this case a monotypic species having no subspecies carabologists, carabophiles, carabomaniacs  what do you think about?

I found one pair of intricatus (probably ssp. macedonicus?) in the same locality (Katara Pass) and in the same day with C. arcadicus. I'll post a photo in a separate message within few minutes. |

Io invece ho trovato solo esemplari dell'una o dell'altra specie, nello stesso giorno e nello stesso posto, ma del resto ero lì per cercare tutt'altro (i soliti Buprestidi), e ho dato giusto un'occhiata ad un paio di bottigliette con aceto che avevo lasciato lì qualche giorno prima, mentre aspettavo che il sole cominciasse a farsi sentire per veder girare qualcosa. |

In effetti, avete ragione tutti e due  Johannes von Nepomuk Franz Xaver Gistel (1809 - 1873 (o 1874)) era un naturalista tedesco che visse a Monaco, pubblicando alcuni lavori entomologici e descrivendo nuove specie anche fra i rettili, gli anfibi ed i molluschi. Aveva a quanto pare il vezzo di firmarsi anche Gistl e non solo... Usava anche lo pseudonimo di Telesius, come si evince da questo lavoro. Come diceva qualcuno: "...se non son matti, non li vogliamo" Le sue collezioni sono oggi conservate presso lo Zoologische Staatssammlung München. |

Name Gistl is provided for all authors (Deuve, Brezina, Prunier, Lassale) This name is shared Breuning. I do not know why this should be changed to Gistel. He is so much confusion in the scheme of the genus Carabus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gr. Stephan Breuning :Monografhie der Gattung Carabus L.

I must notice that when the complete name of the author is written there is not a full stop at the end (Born - Kolbe - Csiki) while there is a full stop when an abbreviation is used (Lap. = Laporte, Reitt. = Reitter, Thoms. = Thomson, Gist. = Gistel?, Gistl. = Gistel?) But I don't understand the utility to shorten a name removing just one character! I'll check some of my books, because Gistel described also several Buprestidae. |
