After the key of R. Sciaky, the only species that fits (somewhat ...), is Penthophonus astutus Tschitscherin, 1903. But this is reported from Syria - not from northern Turkey. Except of the original description (length of holotypus 10.5 mm.), I not found anything else for this species. The specimen here (mature adult) was found under a stone, at a pasture, altitude of about 900 m. Length 14 mm. Any idea would be very welcome !!!

If I can see the photo correctly this should be an Ophonus (Macrophonus) oblongus (Schaum, 1858). For sure it is not a Penthophonus, that is much shorter and robust. At the time of my revision I did not know the E-Mediterranean fauna and these groups are not completely well treated, sorry. Greetings

Thank you very much Riccardo !!!  It was the 4th time that I tried to identify it (within 20 years), by different ways/methods, but always it ended in a deadlock. Your personal intervention was better than any kind of key.  At last, there is a name for this insect.  Macrophonus oblongus is also mentioned from Greece (Apfelbeck, 1904), but I have never met it in my country.  George |
