not sure what species you have there, but this specimens looks very interesting. I'm thinking that this is maybe a saggital hermaphrodite??? long antenae/short antenae on each part, long elitrae/short elitrae on each part. I'm really curious what Isotomus will say about this. cosmln |

Cosmin, the left elytron is really shorter, but the left antenna is just broken after the 8th segment! |

I'm thinking that this is maybe a saggital hermaphrodite??? ....cosmln Not appears here, but the correct term is gynandromorph. Hermaphrodite is a normal state in some animals that they have both male and female gonads and genitalia. This is usually happening in insects at phasmids or in Saga pedo, when they are only females, the males not being necessary, but can appear accidentally sometimes. Gynandromorph is an accidental state, when the some specimen has both male and female secondary characters. These specimen usually cannot mate and cannot have successors. |

Questa è una forma parzialmente melanica di appunto ![]() Con antenne interamente nere e femori posteriori parzialmente anneriti. Propongo qui anche la chiave del genere Stenopterus proposta nell'Atlante del 2002. Key to the species of Stenopterus 1 Antennal scape strongly depressed and longitudinally furrowed on outer edge ........ S. ater (Linnaeus) – Antennal scape without longitudinal furrow on outer edge ........................ 2 2 Disc of pronotum with two lateral swellings, usually smooth, rarely punctate ....... 3 – Disc of pronotum with lateral swellings and median elevation near base, the latter sometimes small or not very distinct ......................................................... 5 3 Elytra with basal black stripe; front margin of pronotum with band of gold pubescence interrupted at middle; legs entirely reddish ............................................... 4 – Elytra black only at shoulders; front margin of pronotum with complete band of gold pubescence, not interrupted at middle; all legs with black femoral club ......................................................................... S. kraatzi Pic 4 Lateral margin of pronotum nearly angulate at midlength, discal swellings punctate, hind margin only medially with dense gold pubescence; base of elytra with large black transverse band. Endemic species from eastern Turkey .................. S. adlbaueri Sama – Lateral margin of pronotum roundly tuberculate, discal swellings smooth, hind margin with complete transverse stripe of gold pubescence; elytral base with relatively narrow black transverse band. Species from Europe and Middle East......... S. flavicornis Küster 5 Elytra, antennae and legs entirely reddish ......... S. mauritanicus Lucas – Elytra, antennae and legs at least partly blackened ....................... 6 6 Elytra strongly narrowed and bent towards apex; pronotum without yellow recumbent pubescence...... 7 – Elytra at most feebly narrowed and bent towards apex; pronotum with spots of yellow recumbent pubescence near anterior and posterior margins ..................................... 8 7 Antennae distinctly shorter than elytra, segments short and stout, from 5th onwards distinctly dilated at apex; elytra clothed with shorter pubescence; sternites densely clothed at sides with greyish pubescence. Endemic species from Crete ........... S. creticus Sama – Antennae not or slightly shorter than elytra, with segments slender and not dilated apically; base of elytra with longer and thinner setae; sternites at sides without pubescence. Species from Ikaria (S. similatus similatus) and Cyprus (S. similatus mehli Sama) ............................................................................. S. similatus Holzschuh 8 Antennae entirely black; sclerites of endophallus characteristic (Sama, 1995c, fig. 17) ................ S. atricornis Pic – Antennae never entirely black or dark brown; sclerites of endophallus of different shape (Sama, 1995c, fig. 21.. S. rufus (Linnaeus) |

Sorry Jan, but I do not agree ![]() Who recorded S. ater from Crete ? maybe Bense (1995) ? This is certainly a mistake. As probably you know, Bense also recorded S. similatus from Crete, based on Holzschuh's description of this species; this is the species later described as S. creticus, very likely the same recorded by Bense as S. ater. Moreover, I do not know S. atricornis from Lebanon, but it could be possible although it is unknown in Syria. Would you like to give me the origin of your record ? Stenopterus flavicornis is only known from Turkey. Who recorded it from the Near East ? I wrongly recorded it from Israel in my revision, but it have corrected this mistake in 2002 (Atlas..) "Very unusual distribution: central and southern Europe, Jordan, Syria, Israel. Thermophilous, in central Europe known only from xerothermic localities (Austria, Slovakia and Hungary); central and south-eastern Italy, more widespread in Balkans from Triest and Istria to Peloponnese, Bulgaria and Rumania, replaced in Turkey by S. kraatzi Pic, 1892 and in eastern Turkey by S. adlbaueri Sama, 1995. Instead of S. kraatzi as erroneously stated in my revision (Sama, 1995c: 401, Fig. 48), S. flavicornis occurs in Syria, Jordan and Israel. Old records from North Africa, Iberian Peninsula and France are incorrect and partly refer to S. mauritanicus Lucas, 1846". Stenopterus atricornis occurs not only in "Continental Greece", but also in Peloponnese (Rapuzzi collection, but already in Slama & Slamova1996). ![]() |
