Hi, collected this small cerambycids (9-10 mm) in Peloponnese (37.854341/22.459604) in 24.may.2010. is the only specimen found... to me this looks like a Stenurella (but something between melanura and septempunctata). is possible to say something from this photo? grazie, cosmln

Dear Cosmin, your Stenurella is interesting. It looks melanura (Linnaeus, 1758) but according the light color of the elytral hairs I think that it belongs to samai/sennii group. Anyway samai Rapuzzi, 1995 is known from European side of Turkey, SE Bulgaria, NE Greece and NW Anatolia and sennii Sama, 2002 is apparently diffuse in all over Europe mixed with melanura. In my opinion your specimen (it is alone or you collected other?) must be checked under the binocular. Best regards, Pierpaolo

rechecked this particular specimen now and I think I have to do some clarification, the hairs on elitrae are blackish, this is just an effect of the light. but now will come with the reason that I'm here on this topic again. found another specimens, 5 that are prepared in my collection and another 4 (3 males & 1 female) that are prepared to be sent were is needed. this 9 were all collected on flowers of Rubus in 28.may.2010 in Peloponnese, Kalogria area (38.161816/21.390235). will post another two photos (male & female), this time stacked images and done with diffuser so the colors are more accurate. will be nice to hear some opinions grazie

Hi Cormin, why not Stenurella bifasciata bifasciata (Müller, 1776) ? The abdomen is reddish or black ?

I have 9 specimens in collection right now (and 4 papered) that are exactly the same. in attach a file side by side a typical romanian female and a female from Greece (with some lines to see better proportions)

Stenurella cfr. intermedia Holzschuh, 2006
… I have studied the material of my collection collected in the whole Greece area and in Albania. It seems that all females (except from the NE area) have this pattern. Pronotal punctuation is somewhat denser than in bifasciata and sparser than in melanura, therefore it could be regarded as intermediate (so, S. intermedia), but transitional forms (elytral pattern like that and pronotal punctuation like in S. bifasciata or not very different) occur in central Greece and, even though more rarely, also in Peloponnese. Probably S. intermedia should be regarded as a good subspecies of S. bifasciata, rather than a distinct species. It is clear that S. bifasciata tends to form separate populations in the extreme parts of its distributional range (limbiventris in eastern Caucasus and NE Turkey, nigrosuturalis in southern Turkey and the Near orient, this one in Greece and I have a series of specimens from Sicily somewhat different as well) …

Dear Cosmin, I think not correct to call S. intermedia your specimens before to compare them to the type material. Here below the original description of Stenurella intermedia Holzschuh, 2006 published in Entomologica Basiliensia et Collectionis Frey, 28 (2006): 205-276 I hope you are able to understand German language, if necessary I could translate for you. (English or Italian, as you like).

"Descrizione. Colorazione nera, elitre come in S. bifasciata bruno-rossastre con stretto margine suturale e apicale neri; sterniti addominali visibili 2-4 bruno rossastri, Pubescenza. Elitre fortemente punteggiate come in S. samai.
Diagnosi comparativa.

Cosmin, yours species are interesting - it belong to S.bifasciata group (pronotum with scattered and small punctuaction, shining) not melanura-group. It can't be Stenurella intermedia (present title are this topics is wrong; it would be better "Stenurella cfr.bifasciata) ;-). Stenurella intermedia belong (after description Holzschuh's) to melanura group ( "Halschild (...) punktiert etwas weniger als S.melanura, anhlich wie bei S.samai") and it is close to S.melanura. (unfortunately in description S.intermedia Holzschuh's missing definition colours of legs, but I think that are black (they are coloured are in S.novercalis and S.jaegeri)). Gianfranco, thank You for scans papers about S.intermedia! Photographed greek specimens Cosmin's are close to S.bifasciata and I agree with Pierpaolo opinion that it needed study. By the way I have question in case description of S.senni (2002, p.40, last line):: In description of S.senni definition "thicker and golden yellow" refers to "pronotum, elytra and pygidium" or to "hairs"? " S. sennii sp. n. differs from S. melanura in having the erect hairs on head, pronotum, elytra and pygidium thicker and golden yellow in both sexes;". I think that refers to hairs (pronotum are not yellow) but I'm not surely. :-) By the way thema Stenurella could I ask for a better photos of S.pamphyliae? (I enclose a photos extracted from .pdf)

Thank to the courtesy of Holzschuh I have examined the Holotype of S. intermedia. Legs and antennae are black.
