It is a member of the group of two very similar species: Cryptocephalus obliteratifer Pic, 1891 and C. tristigma Charpentier, 1825. Both were recorded from southern Spain and differ mainly in structure of male genitalia.

Dear Gianpaolo,

You are right that geographically Catalogna (and especially Serra del Cadi) is placed in northern Spain but according to the distribution of chrysomelids this region belongs to the "southern" provinces in the sense of the regions located closer to the Mediterranean Basin than to the Atlantic coast (such regions as Asurias, Galicia, Basque Country etc. are true nothern provinces for distribution of chrysomelids). Chrysomelids of Catalogna represent in a large percentage mediterranean elements and Cryptocephalus obliteratifer and C. tristigma also belong to mediterranean elements. Beetle on photo in great probabily belongs to C. obliteratifer because C. tristigma is mostly maghrebian species reported from true southern Spain while C. obliteratifier except Spain was reported also from southern France and northwestern Italy (after Warchalowski 2003).
