Thanks Jan, however it seems different from the Netocia excavata I have from URSS where the elytra are really excavated..

Could you confirm the body size ?

These are other specimens of the same population. Their body size is 20-22mm.
I insist that they have elytral sculpture quite different from the P.excavata I have from Turkmenistan where the elytra are deeply excavated.

It reminds me of P. agglomerata... which is however not recorded in Iran.
What about P. karbalajey

I did not note that the locus typicus of this P.excavata is Moree (Greece?!). Something is wrong on the interpretation of this taxon....

Yes, this the correct use of the name excavata.
Actually, the taxon from Central-Asia we are talking about is excavata Faldermann 1835, which is now called araratica Reitter 1891

Alas, after checking my collection I realized that I wrongly cited P. agglomerata instead of P. karelini.
What I was meaning is that this taxon reminds me of karelini, for the colour, the strong sculpture and the quite spread distribution of white spots, which are however very tiny.
In P. karelini spots are much more and more extended, and present also on pronotum.

There's nothing definite can be said, until we see the genitals of at least one of these beetles.
Personally, I look at these wonderful bugs and think, who are they?
P.(Netocia) excavata araratica? P.(Netocia) schelkovnikovi and Protaetia (Netocia) karbalayei
