Received answer from university from Rittner Oz, he friend Guido Sabatinelli (http://www.glarhyridae.som/Scarabaeinae ... e.html#sor). Oz said that this such female Copris hispanus cavolinii. Copris lunaris in the university collection exist, but do not know from where. Oz speaks, that never saw in Israel Copris lunaris. I sent to Russia not of smaller 200 copies Copris hispanus cavolinii and too never saw Copris lunaris. The day after tomorrow in university will be professor Chikatunov, but I think that he will say ditto.

I know Oz Rittner. He's a very kind person, but in this case he is wrong.

C. hispanus cavolinii and C. lunaris are very common here (the second one more than the first one), so I know quite well them. However, I think it's better if you check by yourself.

Please, compare your female with 3 surely identified females of my collection.

I took a quick photo of Copris hispanus cavolinii (Lazio, Italy), Copris hispanus hispanus (Tunisia) and Copris lunaris (Lazio, Italy).
Note that I had to chose the smallest females of hispanus and cavolinii, and the largest female of lunaris I have, to have them of the same size (about 20 mm).



In my opinion your specimen is a very large female of Copris lunaris (or a female of a different species, perhaps an african species!), but surely not C. hispanus cavolinii

Gigli, do not know that to say. Professor said - C. Hispanus and Oz said - C. Hispanus. I gathered 200 copies C. Hispanus and suddenly among them one C. Lunaris female? From where? And where C. I just got a mail from Stefano Ziani about this Copris issue and I want to clear some things:
Yesterday I got to see only one photo and it was the photo of the C.hispanus. Only today I see the
second one of lunaris.
Yuri, don't be confused, I had only one photo to look at! Laibale wrote you that I never seen it in Israel which is true
but I also told him that it doesn't mean it is not exist in Israel. I also told him how to know between the two species and I understand this information did not reach you. Please next time write directly to me and not through Laibale or any other third side and things will be much simpler and clearer for both of us. In addition, I would be very happy to know the locality and date of your specimen.

Very well! Common efforts in Israel appeared Copris lunaris. On the label date: 26.12.2004. Kiryat Ata, forest, in manure. I wish you all the best.

i saw the whole post: well, lunaris is very widespread but i think it to be armeniacus; please be so kind and check if there are or not 2 protrudings on hind margin of the horn.

that was the first.. the second issue is that everybody may be wrong ... and the various catalogs on israel fauna bear sometimes huge mistakes....
