I have about 20 ex. this Chrysanthia from Samos and Rodos and I think it could be Chrysanthia flavipes. -it is not a geniculata because it does not have the black bristles on the edges of the elytra and has a more coarsely dotted pronotum -it is not planiceps variceps because it has a dark dorsal and not the apical part of the prefemora
BUT flavipes is not known from the Greek islands but only from Turkey, although Rhodes and Samos are very close
please advise which species of Chrysanthia it is,
thank you
Marion

Chrysanthia flavipes is a species sister to C. geniculata and as the latter species it has a quit round pronotum with shallow punctures. It occurs in Rhodes as far as I know, and I guess it should also occur in Samos. Your speciment is C. varipes varipes, common in Greece and Western Turkey. The subspecies planiceps is an anatolian taxon.

Hi, I was looking today at my collection and better at the image, with the compouter (the other day I was with the phone). You are actually right, it is Chrysanthia flavipes, I don't know why but the pronotum looks not like in this species, but the coloration and the general habitus agrees very well. Checking a male could eliminate all doubts: they have thickened femurs in varipes, while being very similar to females in flavipes.

Sorry, I confused varipes varipes with varipes planiceps, varipes varipes has partly yellow legs.
Unfortunately I wasn't online over the weekend so I didn't read your post until today, however I carefully studied my material from Samos and Rhodes and found that it can't be varipes varipes because
-Reitter 1889 - does not have a clear depression in the center of the shield, has pale legs, does not have black bristles, and males do not have thick femora -Kiesenwetter 1861 – males have a small tooth on the metaxoxae -Vasquez 2002 – males do not have sternites shaped like this
In addition, I have Chrysanthia varipes planiceps from Turkey - det. Švihla 1995 as Chrysanthia planiceps and it is a completely different beetle.
Thank you very much for your help and I'm glad we are in agreement, the photo is bad lit, but some of the Rhodes and Samos pieces have an indicated depression on the shield, but the other markings on the males do not match.
Greeting Marion

Hi Marion. Yes, the coloration with broadly yellow fore legs agrees with flavipes, but the pronotum seemed more punctate and rugose than flavipes. Looking better at the picture, it is compatible with C. flavipes. If you have Oedemeridae to examine, feel free to contact me.
