Hi to all,

Recently I was thinking of renewing my photographic equipment and after reading some topics here on the forum I realised I should start from the whole set. What I get at the end I think is a simple and cheap system for studio with a lot of room for improvement.
I have used an old 10Mpix camera with the 18-55mm kit lenses reversed, so the actual cost of all the components of the set without computer is about 220 eu.
For the lightening set I chose a white plastic cylindrical box and made a circular opening.The object is put inside the box and lateral sides (the bottom and the lid) are illuminated by 2 led lampsX12 W ,4200K. On the opposite side of the opening and a and a small part of the lateral sides shold be put black tape.
I have constructed 2 boxes: larger with Diam.54, L70mm, and a smaller Diam.32mm L.54mm.The smaller cylindrical box is appropriate for insect with size less than 6-7mm.

Il risultato sembra buono, ma credo sia un po' complicato posizionare l'insetto nel contenitore.

Mi scuso, certo è colpa mia che non conosco l'inglese, ma anche con la traduzione automatica non mi è molto chiaro il funzionamento del sistema illuminante.

Quel poco che ho capito è che Joro mostra due illuminatori, uno grande ed uno più piccolo.
Da quello che vedo sono formati da un contenitore cilindrico con le due basi aperte e ricoperte da carta oleata (o comunque un diffusore di luce) ed il cilindro ha un foro, immagino sia per fotografare l'interno del tubo. Non trovo indicazioni, ma immagino che l'insetto venga posizionato all'interno del cilindro, forse sostenuto da uno spillo, ma non ho capito bene come.

Probabilmente la fotocamera viene posizionata di fronte al foro e focalizzata sull'insetto fissato dentro al tubo. Le due finestre laterali penso ricevano la luce da due led.

Poi mi sembra che il tutto sia avvolto da della stagnola, forse per evitare infiltrazioni ?

Ma !
Se ho ben capito, non è altro che una "gabbia di luce" un po' strana e con due illuminatori laterali, ma, ripeto, non so se ho capito bene come è fatta e come funziona.

Se qualche anima pia può chiarire i miei dubbi, gli sarei molto grato.

Si Andrea, hai capito bene. La stagnola immagino serva ad aumentare la luminosità interna e ridurre le zone d'ombra, mentre il nastro adesivo nero ad evitare luci parassite.

Come dicevo, anche se il sistema mi sembra abbastanza laborioso da utilizzare (per il corretto posizionamento dell'insetto, più che altro), il risultato finale è una luce col giusto grado di diffusione.

Bisognerebbe metterlo alla prova con qualche specie difficile da illuminare bene, come per esempio qualche Histeridae liscio e lucido.

I think Agrilus is one of the hardest to photograph. A enclose a sample picture of Bembidion, but that was a test picture. Now I can do it better.
About the construction of the box. You dont have to remove the lateral sides. They act both like a diffuser and reflector. You can grind the outer surface to make them thinner, The inner surface should be smooth and intact.
I have mounted a door on the back side of the box. You just pin the insect and close the door. You can take it from a battery container of a camera or remote control, etc. Yes, it is not easy to build if you dont have the right tools. For the second box I get bored and didnt put a door, so I have to use a forceps to pin the insect, but it can be rebuild.
ATTENTION! If you construct such a system do not look directly through the camera! Use live view or picture preview.
