Quel Perotis unicolor sul tronco dell'albero mi sa tanto che è stato messo in posa!

Invece lo Julodis marmottani è nella sua posizione naturale.

Perotis, Maurizio ? I can see Steraspis and I think squamosa...

That one on the trunk, and also those others in your pictures, are all Perotis unicolor. See underside to identify the subspecies (if really there are subspecies!). In Maroc two supposed subspecies are marked in literature: Perotis unicolor unicolor and Perotis unicolor igniventris.

Usually in Southern part of Maroc (from Haut Atlas to the South) there is igniventris (metallic red underside), in the North there is unicolor (green underside, yellow stripes on elytra less marked). In the oak forests near the Ocean it's possible to find the previously considered separate subspecies leprieuri (usually blue), while near the Tizi-n-Test I found pieces of a black specimen.

It's a very polyphagous species (Quercus, Pistacia, Olea, etc.)

Steraspis are very different and larger. And usually on different plants (3 species in Maroc, one on Tamaryx, one on Acacia, one o Rhus)

No, Maurizio, io non metto in posa. Semplicemente l'avevamo spaventato e dalle fronde alte era atterrato sul tronco e lì è rimasto immobile.
Io ho preso diverse Perotis unicolor in un viaggio precedente e questi sono almeno il doppio di dimensioni e diversi nel colore.

But they are amazing, aren`t they ? I have never ever seen such a strange colour variation ? of these ! The yellow edge of the elytra....I have never even heard about it ! Anyway, you enjoyed that place, didn't ya ? So, shut it, my " hydraulic " amico

to be clear - I had that idea with Steraspis, Gian Luca is innocent in this case

This is the typical look of Perotis unicolor igniventris (red underside and yellow stripes).


Per il colore, l'avevo già spiegato prima. Per le dimensioni, variano molto, come in gran parte dei Coleotteri xilofagi.


Tamaryx in Italian is Tamerice.
Zizyphus in Italian is Giuggiolo.

Giuggiollo ! Yes, That is the word ! It looked like they were feeding on it. They were flying from this tree on Tamarix and Argania spinosa. I have seen some big Buprestid like exit holes on Tamarix, so I suppose they were coming out of it.

When we were trying to figure out what it is, I have seen some photos of Steraspis on my tablet and ...I dont know why, I thought that it is...yes, just the body shape is completely different....maybe too much beers ?

Maurizio, do you know where I could read a bit more about these ?
