Hello, I am preparing an entomological trip to Greece (Thessaly) in May-June 2015, in the region of Karditsa and Mt Ossa. I have read on a US forum (http://www.theskepticalmoth.com/collect ... mment-1077) the regulation of insect collecting could have recently changed in Greece. According to this forum, it would now be banned, as in Turkey. I have not been able to obtain reliable information about it. Does anyone have recent information about this interdiction ? |

 i have been in karditsa and tessaglia few months ago. It is also possible collecting beetles not allowed but i suppose greeks has lot of problems to think now. We had no problem with local police. In 2013 my car was stopped by police in Crete. They saw beetles, nets and all entomologi gical equipment and nothing happened...

Many thanks for the information, Marcello. However, I should prefer the official position of the Greek Administration. I have contacted without even an answer the Nationals Parks Management Authority (Forest service of Parnitha), as well as the Hellenic Entomological Society in Athens. |

interesting. Maybe i should ask you contacts for permission cause i will surely return in greece in 2016 or 2017... Let us know if authorities of Greece allows your resesrches. |

Dear Dominique, a couple of years ago I tried to contact the greek authority in charge for giving the collecting permits within the Chelmos-Vouraikos Geopark, but I never received a reply. So, simply, I sampled the beetles out of the boundaries of the Park, and have had no problems at all. Anyway, I know that, from time to time, the rangers may ask for a permit. Have a look here, where you'll also find a document about a request of permit. |

Hello Maurizio ! I had these days a very interesting contact with a member of the board of the Hellenic Entomological Society, who can be considered as a reliable source of information about legislation and its application. He confirmed me that collecting plants and animals (like insects) is illegal in Greece. Permits are required to collect in the entire Greek territory, outside the national parks and other protected areas. This law is old : 1987, but has been recently updated, in order to include some guidelines from European Legislations about threatenes species. He gave me the coordinates where to get these permits. But they are very slow to get (ah, the bureaucracy!), also many entomologists do not ask them. In fact, he says that there is no real risk for entomologists in trip in Greece.  @Marci : I can if you want give you the coordinates and information for permits in a Personal Message. |

I didn't know about this law, but I can say that in the recent years rangers and controls are more frequent and strict. Some friends of mine that went in Greece last spring in two localities, had an encounter with a ranger that absolutely prohibited to go further with the research, and he hasn't benn too kind  .

Lo so...lasciamo perdere Marcello...si aprirebbe una polemica...e visto che noi entomologi lo sappiamo che non siamo dannosi alle popolazioni ma qualcos'altro sì, e che su questo forum non ci sono le persone che dovrebbero sentire è inutile anche iniziarla  .
