A species known only from Syria, till now. Genus and species, for 1st time in Europe. Rare insect, only few specimens in 3 Greek islands, at central - north Aegean sea. On twigs of Quercus, Pistacia, Platanus and Pyrus, from June to July. Male 2.3 mm., female 2.1 mm.

Nice find, indeed. A small piece of history. Abeille de Perrin at some point (1890) began to spell Trauglops, Traugliscus, Caulautes, etc. So when he described this genus he called it Callotrauglops from Greek καλός. One year later, he went back to Colotes, Troglops etc. and for this one he corrected to Calotroglops, with one "l" only. So to me it is not clear at all which of the three variations is the appropriate generic name  ... G.

If there is in the original publication itself, without recourse to any external source of information, clear evidence of an inadvertent error, such as a lapsus calami or a copyist's or printer's error, it must be corrected. Incorrect transliteration or latinization, or use of an inappropriate connecting vowel, are not to be considered inadvertent errors. So, they do not require mandatory correction. Also, based on art 33.2 the subsequent different spellings are, as you describe them, intentional but unjustified emendations, and as such they should be treated as junior objective synonyms, except that 33.2.3.1. when an unjustified emendation is in prevailing usage and is attributed to the original author and date it is deemed to be a justified emendation. Not straightforward, indeed... |
