This is Sphenoptera (Sphenoptera) antiqua (Illiger, 1803) (confidence 60%) or Sphenoptera (Sphenoptera) barbarica (Gmelin, 1790) (confidence 40%). I would like to see more light on the elytra. Ciao  Adrian |

Adrian, antiqua for sure not. It has 4 big elytral strias on each elytra, " rauca like ". And the alpine biotop aint really for antiqua, is it ? My guess was barbarica as well. I will try to do bette photo later today.

I found antiqua in the hilly habitats in Romania, but the latitude counts. Can you remember what the host plant was ? Astragalus, Trifolium? |

Yes, it has been sitting on the ground before noon and sunbathing, 1 inch from Dorcadion ossae  ...otherwise I would not find it.I dont think I can do a better photo

It looks like barbarica, but I have a record of barbarica at 20 m altitude (close to the Black Sea Coast). It is definitely not rauca, due to the shape of the body. I have to check tomorrow if is another species of Sphenoptera (Sphenoptera) in Greece, among antiqua and barbarica. |

As I promissed, I checked in: Muhle, Brandl, Niehuis 2000. Catalogus Faunae Graeciae. Coleoptera: Buprestidae. Augsburg. and they are 8 species of the subgenus Sphenoptera. I know well only antiqua and I have keys only for antiqua and barbarica. The 8 species according with Muhle, Brandl, Niehuis (2000) are: antiqua (Illiger, 1803) ardua Gorly & Laporte, 1839 ariadne Obenberger, 1913 barbarica (Gmelin, 1788) chrysostoma Gory & Laporte, 1839 coracina (Steven, 1829) lapidaria (Brulle, 1832) melitta Obenberger, 1927 Momentary, I give up

Quindi, considerando le sinonimie, attualmente le Sphenoptera s. str. ufficialmente presenti in Grecia sarebbero: antiqua (Illiger, 1803) barbarica (Gmelin, 1788) chrysostoma Gory & Laporte, 1839 coracina (Steven, 1829) lapidaria (Brulle, 1832) Non sono sicuro che tutte le immagini siano correttamente determinate. Qui comunque c'è anche S. cuprina e S. chrysostoma |

Hi gents. Most it looks like barbarica from those pictured, but the head and pronotum sculpture dosnt match my specimen that much. Im gonna try to find descriptions of these and check it out. Thanks to everyone !

A volte si trovano cose inaspettate nei posti più impensati, come una tesi sulle Sphenoptera in una università del Montana. Considerando che questo genere in Nord America non esiste ... Ci sono le chiavi dicotomiche dei vari gruppi di specie di Sphenoptera dell'ex Unione Sovietica, e belle foto dell'habitus e dei particolari utili per l'identificazione di molte di esse. Se a qualcuno può servire, ecco il pdf. |

Ho idea che questa non sia S. barbarica, ma S. chrysostoma. |
