Chrysodema elongata Kerremans, 1900

Non tutte le Chrysodema sono colorate e splendenti, a dispetto del nome.
Questo esemplare, più piccolo e con elitre a coste praticamente nulle, è diverso dalla forma tipica, e probabilmente corrisponde alla keyensis di Théry.

La colorazione violacea-bluastra è reale o è un effetto dell'illuminazione?

In luce diretta è di un nero lucido laccato, ma con luce diffusa si vedono queste tonalità di colore. Se però l'avessi fotografata senza diffusore sarebbe stata tutta un riflesso e non si sarebbe capito molto.
Il ventre è di un blu metallico scurissimo.

I think, that this isn’t Chrysodema elongata Kerremans, 1900. Ch. elongata has four big ribs. I think too, that Ch. elongata is only synonym for Ch. aeneoviolacea Deyrolle, 1864. The type Ch. aeneoviolacea is not known, but I think that I found it. It is the first beetle on the photo. It is a piece from MNHN (Oberthur’s collection) and it has original Deyrolle’s label. This piece fully corresponds to the description (Deyrolle 1864:16). A syntype Ch. elongata from MNHN has bronze colour but the second syntype (from BMNH - http://coleopsoc.org/buprestidae/images/BM31.jpg ) is brown (as Ch. aeneoviolacea). It would confirm my idea that the valid name should be Ch. aeneoviolacea and then Ch. elongata a Ch. keyensis would be synonyms. I‘m going to process it now. I have very similar beetles (probably the same) also from Larat Island (Tanimbar Islands), ca. 150km south of Key Islands.

The beetle on the Maurizio’s picture is Chrysodema from the Ch. radians group. From Key Island(s) is described Ch. coelestina Obenberger, 1922 (it is synonym for Ch. radians today, but Ch. radians is very different beetle). A little problem is, that the type is violet female (photo). I heard about violet pieces from Key Island but it‘s very rare. Most pieces are dark brown (as the Maurizio’s photo), but I have also one green male (from Kei-Besar Is.). Very similar beetles live on the Buru Island (dark, violet, blue and green coloured ). Beetles from Buru Is. have differently punctured abdomen, therefore I think that it is other taxon.

This is probably Chrysodema coelestina Obnb., which is colour variable. And the taxon from Buru Is. is probably Chrysodema laevipennis (Boisd.) - it is also synonym for Ch. radians today - which is very colour variable too (see this link viewtopic.php?f=73&t=65348 ).

This is my opinion... for the time being

But the whole group needs revision.

I continue in my work on other groups of Chrysodema a probably will be new taxa again. I have material from museums and also some private collections but the more material for study the better. In return I can make them paratypes for you .

They are following taxa:

Chrysodema aurostriata (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam? – without Ch. tonkinea) there are probably two species
Chrysodema lewisii – pieces from Kerama Islands (Kumejima Is., Akajima Is., Tokashikijima Is., Kuroshima Is... – west of Okinawa) and Okinawa; probably subsp. nov.
Chrysodema wallacei/mniszechi – dark, small pieces from Haruku Island (between Ambon and Ceram) and maybe also from Saparua Is., south Ceram and north Ambon
Chrysodema radians group - dark taxon from Timor island

This is really Chrysodema (Pseudochrysodema) coelestina Obenberger, 1922 valid species again, not synonym of Chrysodema (Pseudochrysodema) radians (Guérin-Méneville, 1830).
