Clambidae – it´s not Clambus, Loricaster, Calyptomerus. I dont know another genus in west Palearct.
Cybocephalus, Nitidulidae - I sent this photo to Mr Jelinek in Prague. He does not know what it is. I ´ll tarsi calculate, but I have not this beetle at home now.
Leiodiidae ?!?!

Ciao Giuseppe

I sent the photo to our great coleopterist Adam Slipinski and he has the same opinion like Giuseppe: probably Cybocephalidae (or Clambidae) but photo of ventral part of body is necessary to proper identification.

By Jon Cotter it is not Leiodidae and Clambidae, but Cybocephalidae or Nitidulidae.
Eyes are not round rather flat.
I think it's not Clambidae. This beetle is very hard, has strong burrowing legs with hairs.
I think it could be a Cybocephalidae but in Catalogue of Palearctic Coleoptera this genus is not. Cybocephalidae have not a hair on the legs.
I'll try to make better pictures with more details.

Here is the answer of Trevor R. Smith specialist from the U.S.
That is a very nice specimen and beautifully mounted. You are correct this beetle is in the family Clambidae. Unfortunately, that is about as much as I can say. I am unfamiliar with the European and Mediterranean clambids. In the U.S., we only have three genera in this family with the dominate genus being Clambus. Thanks for sharing the picture and please keep me in mind if you come across any cybocephalids in your travels.
Clambidae or Cybocephalidae ?!?!?!

Hello Marion, Cita: Clambidae or Cybocephalidae ?!?!?! At this point, a photo of ventral side will probably answer your question, Regards G.

marion ha scritto: Clambidae or Cybocephalidae ?!?!?! Ciao a tutti Giuseppe

Beetle is black with bronze luster. Head, pronotum and elytra matt with fine punctation end of elytra with wrinkles. Lateral margin of elytra behind the shoulders with a small protuberance. According to the hind thighs and aedeagus it's not Clambidae. It is Cybocephalidae? Photos in full resolution are here (54 MB): http://www.mantic.biz/coleoptera-crete.zip

With great probability it is Cybocephalus metallicus Baudi, 1870. With Dr. Rafal Ruta we compared it with description in the revision of Palaearctic Cybocephalidae by Endrödy-Younga and in all characters (especially setose legs, shape of head and genitalia) the specimen from Crete agree with C. metallicus. It is distributed on Mediterranean islands and was recorded also from Crete.
