Myrmilla (Myrmilla) mutica is known up to now from Italy, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Albania, Romania, Hungary, Ucraine, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Greece. In Syria occur Myrmilla (Myrmilla) caucasica and Myrmilla (Myrmilla) corniculata. As has been noted (Lelej et Al., 2003) the morphological identification of caucasica and corniculata by females is not certain. |

The female of M. corniculata differs from the female of M. caucasica by the length of supraantennal tubercles and by the length of the process of the first metasomal sternum. M. caucasica has the supraantennal tubercles more or less well defined in the form of denticle or horn, whereas in M. corniculata they are essentially obliterate, forming at most ill-defined protuberances. Conversely, the first metasomal sternum in M. caucasica has a shorter process (even though it is always defined), whereas in M. corniculata it is longer, backward curved. Using these diagnostic characters for identification on the species level is rather ineffective as many of them show some variation in their states and in some cases overlap in both caucasica and corniculata females. |
