Ciao,

# 3351 ♂ captured at the edge of the ponds of Lavilletertre (Dépt. Oise - France) - 25.06.1999

It is the genus Hellwigia because :
- The abdomen is compressed laterally.
- The areolet of the right forewing is open on the left.
- The length of the vein M (of our photo) is not null.
- The vein 3rs-m is very strongly rounded (It is a generic character)
It is the sp. obscura because :
- the apical part of the antennae is not swollen (swollen for elegans)
It is a ♂ (see the photo of apex of abdomen)

Finally :
Hellwigia obscura Gravenhorst 1823 ♂ chi vive anche in Italia .
NB : elegans è stato catturato in Francia, ma non in Italia.

Thank you very much for this Message.
I have "disappeared" because I prepare messages concerning the Symphyta having the black abdomen with yellow transverse bands, but the existing keys are not very convincing !
I also have in preparation a key of the genera of Ichneumonidae which have the areolet of the right forewing open on the left (Ophion, Anomalon, etc).

So long I hope.

Nice catch ! Anyway the sistematic position of Hellwigiini is unclear: most of authors put them as a tribe of Campopleginae (Fauna of Russia, Fauna Eur, ...) but the online version of Taxapad (updated on 16 Oct 2010) put them back in the Ophioninae (with the genus Skiapus) - wing venation agrees with that of Ophioninae for the form of discocubital cell and for the presence of an adventitious vein in the cell 3Cu in the fore wing.
Some info on the environment ?

Environnement :
See the 4 regrouped photos (The photos were not made the day of this capture # 3351).
    1 - The pond.
    2 - A part of the south-east edge of the pond.
    3 - The roadside where the ichneumon # 3351 was captured (with my wife and the daughter of my son).
    4 - The brook which runs of the pond.

I add photo of another H. obscura ♂ # 3313 that we captured in national Forest of St Germain (dépt. Yvelines - France) on 15.06.1999.
    In oak grove in regeneration.
    The sandy ground was absolutely dry.
    This Ichneumon # 3313 was exiting (with others of the same species - I captured only one of them ... alas!) of small bushy rejections of oak, to the foot of a large oak.
