I have a question to Maurizo Mei: do you know that Camponotus lateralis is a complex of two closely related species? They differ at first glance by body setation. In true C. lateralis scapus is without erect setae and in C. sp. cf. lateralis scapus is setose (it is similar situation like in Lasius niger and L. alienus complexes). C. sp. cf. lateralis has also slightly longer and denser adherent pubescence on head and thorax. We have collected the setose species in Catalonia, Mallorca, Croatia, whole Greece including Crete and Dodecanese and north to Macedonia, Cyprus, and in Turkey. Thus, it is widespread form and on many localities sympatric with true C. lateralis. Unfortunately, we have no materials from Italy but general distribution suggests that in your country should be distributed both species. |
