Hi,

found this small carabid (9 mm) in a pitfall trap installed in a mountain area (Babes Mountain, 45.465958 / 25.913235, ~1350 m altitude) (29.june-8.july.2010). The habitat is a Fagus forest (mixed with Abies and some Picea) near the tree limit.
is possible to go for a name? if needed I can try to make also other photos.

Surely a Leistus... other colleagues will probably add more details to this partial identification.

After checking with Trautner & Geigenmuller... no obvious shoulder ---> Leistus piceus (Frölich, 1799). But not sure if here are any similar species (the area is a little out of the limit of this books).

hi cosmin, i see now your last message... no, in this area no species similar to L. piceus is known to occur; also L. gracilis (see fauna eur) has elytra with no prominent shoulders, yet it is a high altitude, nivicolous species, not a forest-dwelling one
