Dimensioni: 2 mm scarsi.

Qui sono al limite delle mie possibilità fotografiche con la reflex. Ancora mezzo millimetro in meno e sarebbe venuto sgranato.

E' un bel Cryptocephalus chrysopus Gmelin, 1790! bestiola molto rara in Italia, ma ho visto in coll. Angelini esemplari raccolti a Volturino (dietro a casa tua!). Altri compiti delle vacanze per la prossima estate!

Avevo pensato anche io a chrysopus, peraltro citato tra le specie rumene da Sanda (2005. Checklist of Chrysomelidae (Coleoptera) of Romania. Travaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle «Grigore Antipa», XLVIII: 119-136), ma non corrispondeva con le immagini del sito di Lech Boroviec. In questi la macchia arancione all'apice delle elitre è più estesa, e non si vede, inoltre, la bordatura aranciata del margine anteriore del pronoto; anche l'edeago, in visione ventrale, sembra diverso, ma certamente è solo un problema di diverso angolo di ripresa fotografica.



Dire che il Volturino è dietro casa mia è poco: CI ABITO PRATICAMENTE SOPRA, tant'è che andata e ritorno sono SOLO ........... 650 km
Comunque, è bello, dopo quasi 40 anni, avere di nuovo i compiti per le vacanze. Magari avessi anche la stessa età di allora!!!!

Maurizio, mea culpa. The male genitalia of chrysopus on my web page:

are artificial. I just prepared two other males from the same locality in Poland and they have genitalia very similar to that specimen from Romania. Chromatic characters are variable (like in many Cryptocephalus) and anterior yellow narrow margin in some specimens is broad in other almost visible. Apical spot can be larger or smaller. Romanian specimen is without doubts typical chrysopus. I will prepare a new photo for genitalia. Better quality photo of chrysopus is in my Iconography of Polish beetles:

Thank you Lech. I assumed either the images in Palearctic Chrysomelidae and in Iconography of Polish beetles were the same, so I checked only one website. Now I know the images are of different specimens, and from now on I will check both sites.
I am aware of individual variability of Cryptocephalus, so I firstly compared their genitalia.
Anyway, despite difficoulties in identifying the specimens (fortunately your website is of great help to me), I am increasingly fascinated by this group.

Maurizio, the European web page were prepared before such fantastic software like Helicon Focus, Combine ZM or AutoMontage. Photos were prepared from several layers manually in Photoshop thus their quality is not as good as in Iconography. On the other hand, I known you previously as lepidopterist and your love to Chrysomelidae was a surprize. But I have also another group of insects in love - ants, so I understand you.
