Hi :hi: ,

I found today 2 Meloe sp. I think this specimen could be M. proscarabaeus ?
And another thing : how I can preserv meloidae species for exchange (for example), and is anyone interested to receive some Meloe sp. from me?

I am not so sure it is proscarabaeus. Could you send a photo where it's possible to see better antennae and prothorax?

Do you mean how to preserve them dried or in ethanole?

I have only these 2 photos, but I will try to crop the antenna and the prothorax.

I am interested how to preserv them in ethanole :)

Regards :hi: ,
Alexandru

Maybe a local form of Meloe violaceus, or perhaps another species I don't know? :?

Thank you, unfortunately I didn't collect the specimen, but I will try today to find another one....About preserving Meloe sp., exists a method to preserv them dry, without pinning the specimen?

Regards,
Alexandru

You can simply put the specimen on a label, exactly in the same way of any other beetle. To prevent the deflation of the abdomen, there are several methods.
One of them is opening the abdomen using a scalpel (underside), remove the viscera and stuff it with cotton wool or silicone.
Another one is preparing the specimen in the usual way, then put it in a freezer to dry for few months, until they dry by sublimation. It is a long way, but provides excellent results.

Today an expert of meloidae (Standa Krejčík) told me that this specimen is M. proscarabaeus :hp: :lov1: :hi:

Dear Alexandru,
your specimen belongs to Meloe proscarabaeus, in particular the phenotype is similar to that of Balkan and Anatolian populations, as well as to those from Ukraine.
Best wishes, Marco Bologna
