Buona giornata.

Questo Pachyrhinus ho trovato due settimane fa nell'est di Maiorca su Pinus halapensis. Ci sono molte foto di Pachyrhinus squamosus che sono molto simili. D'altra parte, secondo Fauna Europaea ci sono altre tre specie nelle isole Beleari: P. cedri, P. javeti è P. lopezi. Da P. javeti c'è un'immagine anche molto simile in questo forum.

Qualcuno sa come distinguere questi specie e quale è il mio?

Lunghezza è 3,8 mm.

Purtroppo non ho nessuna delle specie, quindi non sono in grado di fare alcun confronto.
Quello che posso fare è di inserire le descrizioni originali per ognuna.

I didn't know the genus was formerly Scytropus (or Scythropus). P. cedri (6-6,5mm, and differently colored) and P. javeti (5-6mm,) are much too large for my specimens, which are all about 3,7-4,0mm. The size of P. lopezi fits, but this species should have grey-rose squamules, which lack in all my specimens.

So it should be P. squamosus. On the other hand the descriptions of squamosus and javeti, which is said to be the most frequent species on Maiorca, not clearly differ, and I have the impression that the size specification for javeti is wrong. Another difference is: squamosus: eyes prominent. javeti: eyes only little prominent.

In an old key (Mayer: Bestimmungs-Tabellen der europäischen Coleopteren: Curculionidae 4. Theil) I also found:
squamosus: sides of prothorax dinstinctly rounded. Eyes nearly round
javeti: sides of prothorax cylindrical, only weakly rounded. Eyes oval.

But when I search for pictures in the net, I find photos of french Pachyrhinus with flat eyes and nearly straight prothorax sides (but javeti should be endemic for the Baleares), as well as specimens with strongly prominent eyes and strongly rounded prothorax sides. My own specimens are somewhat in the middle.

As a result my impression is, that this part of the genus must be revised, or the distribution for the species has to be clarified. I will label them provisionally as "P. squamosus" because of their small size.

As a result I think that the species in the genus Pachyrhinus are still not clearly defined. I will label my speciems as. P. cf. squamosus.
