Hi, found this larva under the bark of a dead/fallen fir (Abies alba). Ciucas Mountains, around 1200 m altitude in 21.june.2010, size of the larva was something like 20-30 mm. is possible to say something more from this photos? grazie, cosmln

 Dear Cosmin,it is a larva of Elateridae, very probably of the genus Denticollis. In Romania are recorded two species, linearis and rubens but it is possible also the presence of interpositus.

I would like taking profit of the occasion and ask what is the rule of this device they have in the bottom of the body. It seems a digging device operating backword, or something to fix strongly the larva to its cuniculus. What may it be? luigi
