Chlorophorus herbstii (Brahm, 1790)
Leptura herbstii Brahm, 1790, Insektenkalender, 1(2): 148. Type locality: “Mains” (Germany).
Range. Europe, Asia Minor, western Siberia (southern Urals). Montane species, sporadic in northern Europe: known only from Sweden and Finland, but Althoff and Danilevsky (1997) also list Norway; mountains of central and eastern Europe, eastward to Urals; extremely local in southern Europe, known only from northern Spain and Balkans (Slovenia to Bulgaria and Rumania).
Variability. Similar to C. varius.
Biology, host plants & flight period. Relatively polyphagous on broadleaf trees: Tilia, Quercus, Carpinus, Ulmus, Padus, Betula, Crataegus; Tilia distinctly preferred in Europe. Larvae feed under bark of dead and decaying sun-exposed branches and small trunks (3-5 cm in diameter); Cherepanov (1982) wrote that eggs are laid in dying and recently dead trees, often in dead parts of living trees. Mature larvae penetrate into the wood for pupation. Life cycle of two years. Adults on the host plants and occasionally on flowers in June and July. Larval morphology and bionomics in Cherepanov (1982) and Švácha & Danilevsky (1988); biology in Palm (1959).
